Child’s death under investigation by Montezuma County sheriff, CBI

Five-year old found unresponsive Tuesday morning at Road 20 home

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 5-year-old that occurred Tuesday at a residence on Road 20.

Sheriff Steve Nowlin identified the child as Anika Leonard Sandoval.

The case is being investigated as suspicious because cause of death was unknown, Nowlin said. There were no obvious traumatic injuries.

An autopsy was performed, and the results, including toxicology, are pending. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.

Sheriff deputies and EMTs responded to the home at 16281 County Road 20 north of Cortez about 10:30 a.m. and found Sandoval’s grandfather administering CPR, Nowlin said. The time of death has not been determined.

Nowlin said the girl’s grandmother found the child unresponsive laying in bed with her sleeping mother, Rachel Leonard.

Once awake, Leonard was incoherent and was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, then flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Nowlin said. She has since been released from the hospital.

“It’s heartbreaking. We need to find what caused this child to die,” Nowlin said.
