Charges filed against driver suspected in Montezuma County DUI crash

Woman suffered spinal injury in Christmas Eve crash

Charges were filed Wednesday against a Montezuma County man suspected of causing a Christmas Eve crash that seriously injured a woman.

Roger Wing was arrested late Dec. 24 after a single-vehicle crash near the 800 block of East Seventh Street, in which a female passenger suffered fractured ribs and a spinal injury. Six charges were filed against him in Montezuma County Combined Courts on Wednesday, including one felony, two misdemeanors and three traffic charges. Wing’s preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 7 at 2:30 p.m.

According to police reports on his arrest, Wing told officers who responded to the crash that he had been the driver, and that he had drunk a 12-pack of beer before driving. Cortez patrol officer Ethan Jordan reported that his driver’s license had been revoked for a DUI-related offense.

Wing was charged with vehicular assault while under the influence of alcohol, a Class 4 felony; DUI and driving under restraint, both misdemeanors; and the traffic offenses of driving without insurance, failing to lawfully display license plates and failing to use a seatbelt.

Wing participated in the filing of charges through a video conference call from the Montezuma County Detention Center, where he was incarcerated. He reportedly suffered a head injury in the crash and was treated and released at Southwest Memorial Hospital before going to jail.
