Sheriff’s office plans short course on water law
The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Division of Water Resource, Montezuma Valley Irrigation, the Mancos Water Conservancy District, and the Dolores Water Conservancy District will host a three-hour course titled Water Law 101 on Thursday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the Montezuma County Fair Grounds, 30100 U.S. 160, Cortez.
The course is intended for all community members involved in any aspect of irrigation water and who desire additional knowledge on their rights and responsibilities. The information presented will assist water consumers in understanding the roles of the agencies involved and the water districts they subscribe too.
Areas covered will include both civil and criminal ramifications pertaining to water law and water usage. The Sheriff’s Office hopes to alleviate conflict between stakeholders during the water season.

Registered nurse joins SCCC as adviser
Registered nurse Kathleen McInnis has joined the advisory committee of Southwest Colorado Community College.
Students at Southwest Colorado Community College can earn degrees in medical assistant, Nursing, Radiologic Technology and certificates in emergency medical technician (EMT), nurse aide, medical assistant and paramedic.
McInnis currently the executive director of the Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center, a post she has held since 2012. The organization serves residents in Archuleta, Dolores, Hinsdale, La Plata, Montezuma, San Juan, San Miguel and Ouray counties.
McInnis completed her master’s degree of Science in Community Health Nursing from the University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center in 1994.
She will work alongside 12 community members already on the advisory committee.
Home Builders name scholarship winner
The Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado has awarded a $250 scholarship to Matthew Rushing to complete his certificates in pipe welding and structural welding.
According to Patrick Flores, coordinator of High School/College Relations with Southwest Colorado Community College, Rushing is a senior concurrently enrolled at Montezuma-Cortez High School and Southwest Colorado Community College’s welding program.
He is completing his second year in the welding program that will earn him certificates in pipe welding and structural welding. He has been involved with the high school’s Future Farmers of America organization. His parents are Al and Jean Rushing.
U.S. construction spending down in January
U.S. construction spending fell in January, reflecting weakness in spending on office buildings and other nonresidential projects and in government activity.
Construction spending fell 1.1 percent in January after a revised 0.8 percent increase in December, the Commerce Department reported Monday.
Spending on home construction rose 0.6 percent, but spending on nonresidential projects dropped 1.6 percent, reflecting declines in hotels, office buildings and the category that covers shopping centers. Spending on government projects declined 2.8 percent in January.
