Fresh off of Spring Break, the Dove Creek High School track teams ran into tough competition at the Frank Woodburn Invitational on April 5.

Held at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction, the Invitational hosted 21 schools and featured several talented athletes who figure to enjoy success at the state track meet later this year.

Falling just short of her early season marks, yet still placing well, Bulldogs’ senior Madison Young enjoyed a solid day, finishing fourth in the shot put (34 feet, 1/4 inch) and eighth in the discus (92 feet, five inches).

Also breaking into the top-10 for the Bulldogs was senior Corissa Guynes, who crossed the line tenth in the 300-meter hurdles (50.33).

Other top finishers for the Bulldogs included Jessica Guynes, who finished 16th in the 400-meter dash (1:08.30), Shelbie Knuckles, who finished 21st in the 400 (1:10.57) and Kristin Knuckles, who placed 25th in the 1600 (6:37.98) and 29th in the 800 (3:06.38).

“It was across the spectrum,” said Bulldogs’ head coach Jason Fury of his team’s performance. “We had some really good things and we had some things that we need to improve on.”

Hankins leads Bulldogs at Invitational

Leading the way for the Bulldogs’ boys’ team, senior Taylor Hankins showed signs that he is rounding into form, placing 13th overall in the 300 hurdles (46.22). Hankins also finished 34th overall in the 100-meter dash (12.52).

Other top finishers for the Bulldogs included Case Baughman, who finished 26th in the 300 hurdles (49.17), Nick Jones, who finished 30th in the 100 (12.34) and Tyson Smith, who finished 34th in the shot put (32 feet, eight inches).

“Getting in shape is the largest part,” said Fury. “We’ve got some miles to put on the feet still.”

The Bulldogs’ track teams will next compete at the Montezuma-Cortez Invitational in Cortez on April 9.
