Commissioners plan public workshop

The Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners will host a public workshop on Thursday, Dec. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Montezuma County Annex, 107 N. Chestnut St.

This workshop will provide an overview of Bureau of Land Management lands within Montezuma County that are being considered under the proposed BLM master leasing plan, and will provide an opportunity for the public to identify specific concerns regarding fluid mineral leasing.

Fire district hosts blood drive

The Cortez Fire Protection District will host a blood drive and food drive at Station 1, 30 N. Ash St., in the back parking lot, on Thursday, Dec. 17 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Come by to give blood through United Blood Services, and drop off a donation of nonperishable food items. All food donations will go to the Good Samaritan Center, and all donations stay in your local community.

Kiva Montessori begins enrollment

Children’s Kiva Montessori School, a free Colorado Public Charter School under the Montezuma Cortez RE-1 School District, will begin enrollment in December for the 2016-2017 school year.

Cortez accepting plastic for recycling

Plastic will now be accepted as part of the city of Cortez’s Residential Recycling Program.

A separate trash bin has been placed at the City Service Center in the Industrial Park for plastic. Other bins are for cardboard, mixed paper, mixed glass, tin cans, and aluminum cans. All recycling products need to be separated into the appropriate bins.

To recycle plastic:

Check the label. Make sure that the bottle is clearly labeled with one of the above symbols before recycling.

Rinse all plastic bottles so they are free of contaminants.

Remove all lids. Lids are generally a Type 5 plastic and not allowed in this program.

Examples of Type 1 and Type 2 plastics:

Milk bottles (1-gallon, ½-gallon)

Water bottles (8 ounces to 2 gallons)

Fruit juice bottles

Laundry and fabric softener containers

Bleach bottles

Windshield solvent bottles

Soda bottles (1-3 liters)

Cortez artist to judge Farmington contest

People’s Choice, an art exhibit sponsored by the Farmington Downtown Association and the nonprofit Three Rivers Art Center, is accepting entries.

The event, which runs March 19 to April 8, will include Four Corners artists and is judged this year by Cortez-based artist Susan Reed.

Artists will be accepted on a first-entered basis until venues are full. The event culminates at the April 8 Downtown Art Walk. The public will vote for their favorite piece and be eligible for a cash award of up to $750.

Reed will view the artwork on site and make a selection for juried awards. Interested artists can pick up a prospectus at Three Rivers Art Center, 109 N. Allen, Farmington, or request from skinnyartist@hotmail.com.

Cortez trash crews taking holidays off

Cortez refuse crews won’t be working Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

Friday trash pickup will be done on the Thursday before each holiday. Trash for both days needs to be out by 5 a.m. Thursday morning.

M-CHS winter concert set for Dec. 17

Montezuma-Cortez High School will host its winter concert on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.

It will feature instrumental and vocal music ensembles.
