The spokesman for U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert has resigned less than two weeks after the Republican congresswoman from Colorado was sworn into office.

Ben Goldey confirmed his departure to The Colorado Sun after it was first reported on Saturday by Axios. Goldey did not respond to additional questions from The Sun, but he told Axios that he was leaving in the wake of a deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

“Following the events of January 6th, I’ve decided to part ways with the office,” Goldey told Axios. “I wish her and the people of Colorado’s Third District the best.”

Boebert, of Rifle, has been the subject of national headlines since taking office earlier this month because of her vows to carry a handgun at the Capitol and in Washington, D.C., and because of her efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. She was also accused of live tweeting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s movements during the insurrection last week.

As a result, Boebert has been attacked by Democrats in Congress and faced calls from local Democratic officials in her district to resign.

“The office does not comment on internal personnel matters with individual employees,” Jeff Small, Boebert’s chief of staff, told The Colorado Sun on Saturday. “Rep. Boebert has hired a powerhouse team, filled all staff positions in her office and hit the ground running. Rep. Boebert looks forwarding to focusing on and serving the interests of the people of the Third Congressional District.”

Goldey’s replacement has already been hired. Boebert’s staff is largely made up of former staffers of former U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, a Republican, and President Donald Trump.
