Project on 980 acres expected to wrap up this weekend

The BLM Tres Rios Field Office is conducting a prescribed burn Oct. 13-15 east of Egnar in San Miguel County.

If conditions allow, the BLM will burn three units of BLM land totaling 980 acres.

The Dawson Prescribed Burn project will assist reducing mechanical treated piñon and juniper debris and will help to increase grass and forb production for big game and grazing by reducing the oak and sagebrush.

Ideal weather conditions Thursday made it possible for firefighters to treat 280 acres, according to a BLM news release. If conditions stay positive, firefighters will continue to burn the remaining 700 acres Friday and Saturday.

The project area is located 11.5 miles east of Egnar on the east side of the Dolores River Canyon.

Smoke might be visible on parts of Colorado Highway 141 and could settle in the Disappointment Valley overnight.

While smoke may be visible in the burn area at times, most of the smoke will lift and dissipate during the warmest parts of the day. Expect visible smoke in the area for several days after each burn is completed as vegetation in the interior continues to smolder.
