Bayfield boys beat Montezuma-Cortez; Panther girls win

The Bayfield High School boys basketball team scored its second league win over Montezuma-Cortez on Friday at BHS, 73-59.

Isaac Ross, who was the only Bayfield senior honored on senior night, scored 10 of his 24 points in the first quarter to help BHS jump out to a 20-12 lead. The Wolverines extended their lead to 40-27 at halftime. The third ended with Ross hitting a fall-away 3-pointer at that buzzer that put BHS up 56-38 as the crowd exploded.

Ross hit four 3-pointers in the game and was one of four Wolverines to finish in double figures. Lance Mazur finished with 20, Caden Wood scored 12, including six in the first quarter, and Jackson Queen added 10.

J.T. Carver scored 15 to lead Cortez. Sawyer Smith added 14, and Gabe Crowley scored nine in defeat.

M-CHS girls pull away to beat Bayfield

The Montezuma-Cortez girls gained a slight edge over Bayfield 10-7 after the first quarter of their Friday night clash. Cortez, however, limited the Wolverines to three second-quarter points as they pulled away to beat BHS, 57-27.

Cortez led 21-10 at halftime and 41-18 after three.

Bayfield senior Abby Tate scored nine points but was plagued by foul trouble and eventually fouled out with 3:25 left in the third quarter. Alaysia Kremer scored 10 to lead BHS, and Jordan Martindale added four.

Twelve Panthers scored for Cortez, led by Bri Comisky with 15 and Taiah Wilson with 10.
