Autumn art walk enlivens downtown Aztec

Feat of Clay in Aztec served as the hub Oct. 8-9, for the annual Aztec Studio Walk, an open house offered by local artists and artisans.

Jewelry maker and an event organizer Pip Howard said on Monday that the turnout was lower than some years – “less than what I would have liked … but we did have great music – violins on Saturday and drumming on Sunday.”

Eighty to 100 people visited her home to enjoy unique art, music and the autumn weather.

The violin duet of Erica Photiades and Catherine Cunningham, San Juan Symphony members from Albuquerque, performed in Howard’s front-yard venue on historic Church Street at 2 p.m. Sam Bell’s “Paint and Sip” followed at 3 p.m.

At that venue, Marty Goetzinger showed her paintings, and Travis Rowe, his custom cutting boards and woodwork. The pottery of Suzanne Howard was also on display.

With all locations in easy walking distance of Aztec’s Main Street, patrons strolled casually to destinations on historic Church Street, Pioneer Avenue and Gordon and Maddox streets.

Bonnie Adams opened her home studio, showing her paintings and sculptures, along with the paintings and pottery of Rick Myers. Artists Steve Unger and Paloma Barons exhibited their paintings and drawings. Barons also gave a papermaking demonstration.

Tim Gordon, event coordinator, showed his paintings, sculptures and ceramics at his home on Pioneer Avenue. Also there, was the jewelry of Lou Mancel and pottery by John Bintz.

On Maddox Avenue, Don Hammontree offered his eclectic sculptures/3D, along with the photography of Stacy Harris.

At noon Sunday at Howard’s place, the African drumming of local musicians, The Badland Boys and The Cowbelles, aroused the neighborhood.

At Feat of Clay Gallery, Amanda Harig offered her graphic design art and paintings. Rick Kenciano presented his water color works, and Richard Kynast, his photography.

Howard’s imperative message and desire for the weekend was, “Buy local.”
