The Durango Public Art Commission voted Tuesday to adopt an aluminum sculpture that will be donated by the nonprofit Tiospaye.

The 9-foot-tall, 500-pound art installation features four human figures holding the word “love.” The base of the sculpture will read “What’s your vision for the world?” It is intended to leave passers-by considering the question.

The sculpture is one of four art pieces Tiospaye plans to install in Durango, Ignacio, Aztec and Cortez in an effort to inspire love and peace in the communities.

Tiospaye is a local nonprofit focused on helping people achieve personal development.

“This is all inspired by gathering people’s visions for the world and what they would like to see in their community,” said Monica Devi Bhakti of Tiospaye.

The art piece was well-received by members of the Public Art Commission for its message and use of local artists in its construction.

“The vision for doing something positive and artistic is very exciting,” said commissioner Charles Leslie. “The durability is solid and the materials speak for themselves.”

Tiospaye anticipates the sculpture, which is nearing completion, will cost about $32,000, which is fully funded by in-kind donations.

The commission discussed installing the sculpture at Rank Park or along the Animas River Trail near the Durango Mall. It hopes to install the sculpture in the spring, pending approval from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
