Paul Berkowitz will discuss his book “Billy Malone and the National Park Service: Investigation at Hubbell’s Trading Post,” at the next meeting of the San Juan Basin Archaeological Society.

Berkowitz also will address issues surrounding Malone, who spent most of his life on the Navajo Reservation working as an Indian trader. He was one of the last to operate the historic Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14 in the Lyceum at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College.

In 2004, the National Park Service began investigating Malone, alleging a long list of crimes. In 2005, Paul Berkowitz, a National Park Service criminal investigator, took over the case. His investigation uncovered serious problems with the original allegations and raised questions about the integrity of some park service employees at various levels.

Berkowitz, now retired, finished his career as a supervisory special agent on the Navajo Reservation. His book will be available for autographs after the lecture.
