Annual Dolores Ski Swap fundraiser coming Nov. 10

Fundraiser sells gear to get kids on slopes
Local skiers check out the merchandise at a previous Dolores Ski Swap.

The Dolores Ski Swap and fundraiser will be held on Nov. 10 at the Dolores Community Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m..

Telluride and Hesperus ski passes will be for sale, as well as a roomful of snow sports gear, including skis, snowboards, snowshoes boots, poles, jackets, packs, goggles, gloves and hats.

The traditional swap relies on people to bring in their unwanted gear to sell. Ten percent of the sales goes toward a ski program at Dolores schools that provides passes for students to ski or ride Telluride.

Items can also be donated, with all sales going to the student ski program.

Drop off equipment to be sold or donated on Nov. 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave.

Student volunteers help set up and break down the event. To qualify for ski pass scholarships, students must volunteer.

Scholarships typically include a lift ticket, transportation and ski or board rentals.

Local vendors include Osprey Packs, Kokopelli Bike and Board, Done Deal and Performance Sports.

“It is a roomful of ski gear, and the sales are for a good cause,” said Cindy Vermeule, ski swap organizer who started the event 19 years ago. “The fundraiser gives local kids the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard when they may not have otherwise.”

She said the event raises between $3,000 and $10,000 per year toward local ski scholarships.

Also, the Hesperus Ski Swap will take place Nov. 3 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
