A plea for civil, critical discourse

I like dark chocolate only, so does this make me a racist? I know, it’s a silly question, except maybe it isn’t if applied to the present state of affairs and divisiveness I see all around me.

Perhaps you only like white chocolate – does this make you a racist? And if you like all kinds of chocolate, does this make you woke and progressive or MAGA? And what might you be labeled if you don’t like chocolate at all? Will you be bullied into accepting at least one chocolate?

Now apply immigration issues into the chocolate scenario. Are you a racist if you want only legal immigrants? Are you woke and progressive if you want all immigrants? And what if you don’t like any immigrants, what then? Will you be bullied into a specific view?

How did we get so divided? Do you only listen to and get influenced by mainstream media or social media, or alternative news sources or unbiased news sources? Critical thinkers consider the pros and cons and all other viewpoints before taking an action. Do you?

Can we allow ourselves the common sense to consider all viewpoints first? Can we calmly discuss opposing viewpoints civilly? I am ever hopeful. Are you?
