Blocks Without Borders is preparing to host an art quilt exhibit at the Turquoise Raven Art Gallery from Thursday through July 30, with a reception and chance to meet the artists planned for 5 p.m. July 9.
It will be Blocks Without Borders’ second exhibit at the gallery.
“Originating from the everyday work that women performed to meet utilitarian needs, the exceptional art of thread, fiber, yarn and fabric meets aesthetic, expressive and creative expectations,” a news release from the gallery said. “Fiber art is very labor intensive, and this quality enhances the significance of the work.”
The gallery compared quilt art to oil paintings and sculptures; it said quilt pieces can be realistic, abstract or nonrepresentational, with all elements of art at play at the artists’ discretion
The gallery has featured fiber artists since its opening. Some of these artists include Theresa Breznau, eco-friendly sun-printed textiles and hand-painted clothing; Laurie Hall, homegrown plant dyes on silk, cotton and repurposed hankies and scarves; Kat Berner, upcycled clothing “with personality”; ShaoShao, “exquisitely” hand-painted banners and T-shirts; Mike Lee, block-printed fabrics and hand-stitched Canyon Cuties and Heather Harvey, haute couture mannequins.
Mary Fuller, who owns the gallery, has been an advocate for fiber arts to be recognized as fine arts, the release noted. Fuller has a background in textile design.
For more information, contact Fuller at (970) 529-3597 or turquoiseravenart@gmail.com.
Images of the artworks, labeled with the artists’ names, will be available on the gallery’s website at turquoiseravenartgallery.com starting July 3.
