The Cortez Recreation Center will host a free open house Jan. 24 for community members interested in sampling workout classes and to thank patrons for their patience during last fall’s weeklong shutdown.
Recreation coordinator Max Loving said the event aims to show appreciation to current members and provide an opportunity for newcomers to tour the facilities and meet staff.
“This is a thank you to current patrons for their patience during our maintenance week. Every November, we shut down the Rec Center to make any repairs, refurbish the space and spruce it up,” Loving said.
The open house, from noon to 4 p.m., will feature free lobby refreshments, outreach tables with programming information and guided tours of the facility. Additional tables will offer details on personal training, classes, youth clubs and partner organizations.
During the open house, visitors can try 30-minute workout classes without a pass or membership, including Pilates, spin, yoga, Zumba and boot camp.
“It’s a great way to see what the Rec Center has to offer, without having to pay for a fitness class. You can try a sample of everything, and if you are a regular at the center, you can try something different,” Loving said.
Loving said this is the first time the Rec Center has offered the event since he started in the position.
He acknowledged the annual maintenance closure can be inconvenient but said consolidating repairs is better than multiple shutdowns each year. The center offers day passes, 20-pass punch cards and annual memberships, with discounts for seniors, veterans and youths.
“This is also a New Year’s kickoff event for folks who might be looking for a new hub or to start their New Year’s resolutions,” he said.
