Volunteers will set up the start line again for Dolores’ annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning – a community event that doubles as a food drive for the Dolores Family Project.

The free event features a 1-mile fun run down Central Avenue and a 5K along the Dolores River Trail. Instead of a registration fee, participants should bring nonperishable food items – cans or cases of any size.

“From a can to a case – whatever you can bring is appreciated,” Bill Stanley, race-day organizer, said.

“Costumes are optional, but we've had so much fun with that over the years seeing hilarious getups and people running down the street,” he said.

This year’s run is called the “second 10th annual” because organizers weren’t sure about last year’s milestone. The race begins at 9 a.m. Thursday in front of Dolores High School. Runners should arrive from 8 to 8:45 a.m. to sign a waiver and pick up a free T-shirt while supplies last. Prizes will be awarded at the finish line.

Stanley said the event aims to be welcoming and lighthearted. The route is open to all ages and strollers, although dogs are discouraged for safety.

The 1-mile course follows Central Avenue and loops around a nearby block before returning to the start line. The 5K route heads down Central, joins the river trail along the Dolores River and loops back via Riverside Avenue.

“It’s just about positive experiences for the community coming together,” Stanley said. “When we’re there, there’s no political parties – it’s just all of us. And of course, it’s about giving back with the food drive.”

Stanley said organizers are still seeking race-day help. Volunteers may contact him through the event’s Facebook page or show up at 7:30 a.m. Thursday for a quick safety briefing. The event features a new PA system and music at the start line.

Food donations collected at the run will be distributed by the Dolores Family Project Monday, Dec. 1, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave.

Dolores Family Project, the local food bank, is relocating after losing its space at Dolores Southern Baptist Church in January. Through December, people can still get food from the pantry at the Community Center from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays.

The Turkey Trot is supported by Dolores State Bank, Galloping Goat Running Club, Kiwanis of Mesa Verde, Elemental Strength/Montezuma Martial Arts, Blue Sky Homes and Land, and the town of Dolores.
