The Sunflower Theatre will host a sneak peek of “Best Day Ever,” a documentary featuring adaptive mountain bikers Greg Durso and Allie Bianchi, on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The 48-minute film highlights individuals who face daily challenges associated with disabilities and overcome them through their passion for mountain biking.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. Before the screening, KSJD, the Sunflower Theatre and High Desert Devo will host a bike ride at 5 p.m. in Montezuma Park. Participants of all ages are welcome.
The documentary focuses on the world’s first fully adaptive trail network in the Green Mountains of Vermont and the riders who use it.
“The idea that trails can be adapted to fit wider adaptive bikes and allow athletes to get farther into the backcountry is a new concept,” said Sunflower Theatre Director Sarah Syverson. “We can make a huge difference by simply understanding what is needed and providing the means to make it happen.”
A panel discussion will follow the screening. Panelists include Vermont-based filmmaker Berne Broudy, Durango-based adaptive athlete Kirk Williams, High Desert Devo Executive Director Ed Whritner, and Durango Adaptive Sports Association Training Coordinator Stefan Rozanski. The panel will address questions about the film and adaptive sports.
“Adaptive cycling is a great example to remind people – which is something we are striving to do with High Desert DEVO – that cycling can and should be for everyone,” Whritner said.
Adaptive sport programs in Southwest Colorado include Adaptive Sports Association in Durango and Telluride. Whritner said that although Montezuma County’s cycling culture lives somewhat in the shadow of Durango’s DEVO and its established cycling community, the area is beginning to shine.
“There is new energy in MOCO at the moment to bring all of the aforementioned together to do big things,” Whritner said, “and the future for the cycling community in MOCO looks very bright.”Tickets are available at www.sunflowertheatre.org.
