Christmas tree permits, which allow you to cut a holiday tree on National Forest and BLM lands in southwestern Colorado, are now on sale.

The $8 permit allows individuals to cut one tree, up to 20 feet tall, for personal use. This year's permits expire Dec. 31.

Permits come with a brochure explaining regulations and helpful tips.

National Forest/BLM offices sell maps and offer advice on areas and species for tree harvesting. Public land offices in Bayfield, Dolores, Durango and Pagosa Springs are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through the holidays.

Permits also are available at City Market in Cortez, Dolores Food Market in Dolores and Cox Conoco in Mancos.

National Forest and BLM roads are not plowed, and even if backcountry roads are not closed because of snow, dangerous ice conditions may exist.
