Sitting Montezuma Cortez Re-1 board member Sherri Wright’s re-election campaign ended with a landslide victory late Tuesday.

With 2,275 votes, Wright easily secured another four-year term as a board member defeating challenger Joseph Miller, who garnered 924 votes, or 71.1 percent to 28.9 percent.

Reached via telephone, Wright was surprised to learn she had won with such a wide margin, stating the vote count demonstrated the community’s continued faith in her experience and abilities. Representing District C, Wright’s top three goals include fiscal responsibility, student safety and meeting state standards.

“I’m thankful,” said the 62-year-old retired teacher, “and I’m going to do my very best.”

In a pre-election media survey, Wright vowed that she would continue to seek input from her constituents and indicated that teachers deserved better pay and respect. In September, she also told The Journal that she opposed a hike in property taxes via a mill levy to increase funding for area schools.

“We are in an depressed economy and the community cannot handle anymore, that does not mean they do not value education, it means there is not anymore money available,” she said.

Unopposed District E board member Pete Montano received 2,742 votes.
