Wray Mesa fire sparks west of Naturita

Colorado and Utah firefighters respond to blaze started by lightning Friday
The Wray Mesa Fire west of Naturita has burned 43 acres.

Firefighters are working to suppress a wildfire 26 miles west of Naturita on the Colorado-Utah border that began June 25.

The Wray Mesa fire in Montrose County has burned 43 acres on Bureau of Land Management land and was 90% contained as of Monday morning, according to fire officials.

It is burning in a remote area of ponderosa pine, piñon and juniper.

Fire crews from the BLM Southwest District Colorado and Color Country District Utah are working the fire. About 70 firefighters were assigned to the fire over the weekend, and staffing will be reduced.

Three engines crews were on the scene Monday – two from the BLM and one from the U.S. Forest Service. Together they are on the ground with the San Juan Interagency Hotshots, based in Durango. Two helicopters, from from Color Country BLM and the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control were dropping buckets of water from the air.

"We intend to engage it directly in coordination with air support and available ground resources," said Southwest District Fire Management Officer Brandon Lewis. "At this stage, our team is actively working to suppress the Wray Mesa fire and keep it as small as possible."

No structures have been threatened or damaged by the fire

Isolated showers with gusty afternoon winds are forecast in the area for Monday, with a return to showers and lightning storms beginning midweek.

The Wray Mesa fire is the largest of 11 fires started by lightning on BLM land in Colorado over the weekend.

The Round Mountain fire northwest of Nucla sparked Sunday evening and has burned on at least 4 acres. A .1 acre wildfire was reported north of Norwood Sunday morning.

The BLM urges the public to be attentive and report wildfires immediately. Early reporting means fires can be extinguished when they are small, making firefighters' jobs easier and safer.

Report all wildfires immediately to the Montrose Fire Dispatch Center at 970-249-1010 or 911.
