Starting Monday, June 24, paving will begin on U.S. Highway 160 between Cortez and Towaoc, as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s resurfacing and safety-improvement project.
Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Motorists can expect 15-minute delays and single-lane alternating traffic through the work zone. There will be no work and no delays over the extended holiday weekend, from Wednesday, July 3, through Monday morning, July 8.
CDOT and contractor Old Castle SW, Inc., began this project in April, completing drainage improvements. The work was then suspended until the paving operations could begin; the project is scheduled for completion by October 2013.
Work includes resurfacing on US 160 between Cortez (MP 37, just south of the city) and Towaoc (MP 27, just north of Towaoc) and was contracted to Old Castle for $5.8 million. The project will greatly improve the highway’s surface and “rideability” by recycling the top two inches of existing asphalt, then overlaying the roadway with three inches of new asphalt.
Work also includes removal and replacement of guardrail, as well as drainage improvements (with the culvert installation).
