Because of the complexity of preservation work at Cliff Palace next spring, Superintendent Cliff Spencer says the site won't open for ranger-guided tours until May 22.

"We hope to complete the first phase of the on-site preservation work before the Memorial Day weekend," said Spencer.

Beginning May 22, summer schedules are expected to be similar to past years'. Work also may be required after Labor Day, and may cause tour reductions in the fall.

"We know this is a problem for some of our spring visitors," Spencer said.

The park plans additional ranger-guided tours of Balcony House possible to provide options for travelers.

"This is the first really extensive stabilization work done at Cliff Palace since it opened to public tours almost 100 years ago," he said. "We have to ask everyone to stay flexible as we work to protect this incredible place."

In May, 2011, archaeologists discovered extensive cracks, wall deformation and structural movement in the southern half of Cliff Palace. Park staff and experts from across the U.S. have been working to document the character and extent of deterioration, and to develop a plan to carry out the required emergency stabilization.
