A Farmington woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and crashing into a school bus south of Durango.

The rear-end crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. south of Farmington Hill on U.S. Highway 550.

Four children were on the bus; none were injured, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the Colorado State Patrol.

The morning commute became snarled as a result of the crash. Traffic on Highway 550 was reduced to alternating lanes, Driscoll said.

Dena Miller, 64, of Farmington is suspected of rear-ending the bus while driving a blue 2013 Honda CRV, Driscoll said. The vehicle sustained severe front-end damage. Miller was cited with careless driving and driving under the influence. Driscoll was unsure what type of drug Miller is suspected of using.

Julie Popp, spokeswoman with Durango School District 9-R, confirmed it was a 9-R bus that was hit.

All students were checked by paramedics; none reported injuries. Another bus was dispatched to the scene to take the children to school.

She characterized it as a “minor accident” for the bus.
