In recent Republican efforts to gerrymander state electoral districts at the command of President Donald Trump to ensure permanent Republican congressional majorities, Republicans have labeled Democrats as “communists” for trying the same strategy.
Such cheap labels reflect the Communist scares of the 1950s when Sen. Joseph McCarthy unjustly used that label to destroy political careers of politicians and Americans who opposed him. Let’s examine that label and measure Republicans against it.
Consider China, governed by a single dictator and rigidly controlled by one party. Oops, that party is called Communist. The same label applies to Vietnam. And to Russia as well.
By their ruthless gerrymanders, Republicans want to establish a permanent, single-party American government, establishing an America in which all voting is reduced to empty symbolism.
So who is the real Communist Party in America?
