Where to recycle your Christmas tree this year

George Cuckie dumps his Christmas tree at the Cortez BMX Park in 2011. Trees also can be dropped off at the parking lot at First and Elm streets.
Cortez and Durango facilitating disposal sites

Christmas is here, and Cortez and Durango are facilitating drop-off sites for tree disposal after the holiday.

Be sure to remove all decorations, including ornaments, tinsel and trimmings, before disposal, the cities asked.

Cortez

The city of Cortez is operating two Christmas tree-disposal sites this year, it announced Thursday.

Sunday through Jan. 8, residents can drop off their trees in the parking lot at the southeast corner of Elm and First streets or at the BMX parking lot on the south side of Empire Street.

Alternatively, Public Works Crews will collect Christmas trees curbside between Jan. 3 and Jan. 7 for locals who cannot make it to the recycling sites. The city asked that trees not be placed in the street or alley.

Durango

Through Jan. 31, Durango residents can recycle their trees at a drop-off location in Santa Rita Park near the playground.

There is no curbside pickup of trees.
