What’s happening this weekend: sports, theater and arts

Bears and Bulldogs play in regional tournament; CMS play premieres

Several local sports teams are involved in title contests on Saturday. There’s also theater and arts.

The Dolores Lady Bears volleyball team hosts the 2A Region G tournament on Saturday. Dolores, 21-1 overall and 13-0 in the San Juan Basin League, enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed on a 21-game winning streak. No. 2 Rangely (19-4, 11-1 in Western Slope League) and No. 3 Telluride (15-8 overall, 8-5 in SJBL) also will be there. Dolores and Telluride start the tournament at 10 a.m.

The No. 1 Dove Creek Bulldogs volleyball team hosts the Class 1A Region E tournament at 15-6 overall and 8-2 in SJBL.The Bulldogs get the tournament going at 10 a.m. against No. 3 Nucla (8-13 overall, 3-7 in SJBL) at 10 a.m. No. 2 Sangre de Cristo (17-6 overall, 9-1 in Southern Peaks League) about 1:30 p.m.

The Montezuma Titans will compete in the Young America Football League Super Bowl on Saturday.The game starts at 4 p.m. at Bloomfield High School, 520 N. First St., Bloomfield, New Mexico. The team of sixth-graders is looking to repeat as Super Bowl champs.

The arts

The Cortez Middle School Theater premieres “Into the Woods, Jr.” at the CMS gymnasium Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.The play is co-directed by Angela Gabardi and Marla Sitton, with accompaniment by Debbie McHenry.

An exhibit of Carole Graham’s wet plate collodion photographs, and William Henry Jackson photochroms will be on exhibit from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at Home & Range, 2409 E. Empire St. Graham’s photos utilize a method used during the Civil War era and involve printing in the field onto metal plates.
