The Bluejays (1-0) opened the season with their annual trip to Tierra Amarilla, NM for a neutral site meeting with New Mexico 8-man powerhouse Melrose. After a defensive start to the game, Mancos’ offense got going, with junior Traycer White snagging over 150 yards of receiving yardage and two scores as the Jays split quarterback duties between senior Michael Resner and junior Hank Guiles. Senior James Potts added the other two Bluejay scores on the ground, as the defense pitched a shutout through three quarters to help the Jays pull away.
Mancos preps for St. David (Arizona) High School in their home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. – a contest that will air on radio station 98.7 and 106.3 FM and krtzradio.com.
After a strong offensive showing in week one, the Panthers (1-1) struggled to find the same gear against the Bruins, falling behind 27-0 at the break before scoring a third-quarter touchdown. M-CHS heads to defending 2A state champ Wellington for a clash on Sept. 5 at 11 a.m.
The area San Juan Basin League teams faced busy weekends, as defending league champion Dolores High School (3-0) collected their second win over an Intermountain League opponent, overcoming an early one-set deficit to blitz Bayfield through their final three, winning 21-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-12. DHS opens league play on Thursday at Nucla.

Meanwhile, Mancos High School (1-3) dropped their first two matches in a tournament at West Grand High School, forcing a tiebreaking set in each of their losses to the host Mustangs and Tigers. Dove Creek High School fell in straight sets to each of their three opponents in the San Luis Valley, and now the Jays and ’Dogs look forward to their first of two regular season encounters at MHS on Tuesday night. The match will be broadcast on local radio station 98.7 and 106.3 FM KRTZ and on krtzradio.com.
