Sept. 5: Dove Creek 22, Rangely 16
The Bulldogs evened their record at 1-1 in another gritty defensive battle against a Northwest League opponent. Dove Creek opens its home schedule next week when it hosts Escalante (New Mexico) on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. The contest will air on local radio station 98.7 FM KRTZ and online at krtzradio.com.
Sept. 6: Strasburg 47, M-CHS 7
After hanging tough through a scoreless opening quarter, the Panthers (1-1) couldn’t keep the top-10 Indians off the board, as Strasburg scored 41 points in the second and third quarters to secure the win. M-CHS returns home for another difficult challenge when 2024 Class 2A state runner-up Wellington visits Panther Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m.
Sept. 6: Sedgwick County 18, Mancos 16
In a back-and-forth top-10 battle, Mancos (1-1) held an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter before the Cougars tallied twice in quick succession to take control at a neutral site in Fairplay. Mancos junior quarterback Michael Resner connected with senior Jonah Ritter on a long scoring pass to cut the deficit, but Sedgwick County played keep-away in the final minutes to deny the Bluejays another chance at a comeback. Mancos returns to the central mountains for a second straight week to face Merino next Saturday at 1 p.m.
Sept. 5–6: M-CHS 4-3 at Page (Arizona) tournament
Playing a marathon seven-match schedule in two days, the Panthers improved to 6-4 on the season with two wins over Kanab, a victory over Coconino, and a win against the host Sand Devils. M-CHS hopes to carry the momentum from the weekend into the Intermountain League opener on Tuesday, Sept. 9, in The Jungle against Bayfield, followed by a home match against Pagosa Springs on Saturday.
Sept. 6: Mancos 3, Ouray 0
The Jays followed up a win in their home opener against Norwood with a comprehensive sweep of the Trojans to even their record at 5-5. Mancos looks ahead to a match on Thursday, Sept. 11, against Highway 184 rival Dolores at 6:30 p.m.
Sept. 5: M-CHS’ Plewe leads the way at Joe Vigil Invitational
M-CHS junior Cruz Plewe paced all Montezuma County runners in Alamosa on Saturday morning, claiming the lone top-100 placement (98th) in the massive meet. Plewe broke the 18-minute mark with a time of 17:56, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Dolores’ top runner, sophomore Joseph Padilla (113th, 18:09). Mancos sophomore Cuinn Archer placed 156th in 18:55 to lead the Jays.
In the girls race, Dolores sophomore Emilynn Hill finished 158th in 22:39, while Mancos freshman Carly Kroll took 172nd in 22:53. M-CHS freshman Shaylie Keiter led her team with a time of 29:26, placing 340th.
Dolores’ boys placed 24th in the team standings, while M-CHS finished 32nd and Mancos 34th. None of the three girls teams fielded a full scoring squad. Ignacio will host the next meet for area teams on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Sept. 5-6: M-CHS 0-3 at Berthoud tournament
The Panthers (2-10) traveled to northern Colorado ready to battle larger schools at the Berthoud Tournament and hung tough in losses to Niwot (14-7), Palisade (8-4), and Resurrection Christian (10-5). M-CHS returns home for its second meeting against Durango on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m. at Englehart Field.
Sept. 5: Telluride 6, M-CHS 2
The Panthers (1-3) jumped out to an early two-goal lead, but the Miners mounted a furious rally to knock off the hosts. M-CHS opens Intermountain League play at Pagosa Springs on Tuesday, Sept. 9, before returning home to face Kirtland Central on Sept. 18.
Sept. 5: M-CHS takes fourth at Monte Vista
The Panthers were led by sophomore Brooks Story’s 84 as M-CHS finished with a team score of 267, just behind regional foes Pagosa Springs and Alamosa. The Panthers head to Pagosa Springs for a tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
