Weather spotter classes offered next week

Residents have a chance to help out the National Weather Service by learning to spot dangerous weather conditions in southwest Colorado.

The NWS is offering two storm spotter training sessions on Tuesday, June 4.

White Mesa, Utah will host the class from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ute Mountain Ute Administration building.

Towaoc will host the class from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ute Mountain Ute Community Center.

NWS meteorologist Jim Pringle will be teaching the class. Participants will learn how to identify various cloud formations, how to gage potentially dangerous conditions, and what to do if they see bad weather developing.

“The National Weather Service does not have very accurate radar for this part of the state, so they need more eyes on the ground locally to communicate bad weather situations like high winds, a fast moving thunderstorm, or hail,” explained John Trocheck, public safety officer and fire chief for the Towaoc Fire Department.

The training is free to the public; just show up. Call 564-5441 for more information.
