Purgatory Resort won praise last weekend from The Wall Street Journal, which declared the “world class” ski area 30 minutes north of Durango as one of four resorts that won’t cost a fortune.

Purgatory met a threshold to be considered a wallet-friendly skiing experience while still offering quality amenities, according to the write-up.

Other resorts that made the list included Bridger Bowl in Bozeman, Montana, Whitewater Ski Area in Nelson, British Columbia, and Mad River Glen in Waitsfield, Vermont.

The article commended Purgatory for its “classic Rocky Mountain” skiing experience and it diversity of different runs. It also mentioned the resort’s pretense-free culture with reasonable prices ranging from $44 to $139 for a day lift ticket and applauded the resort’s children 12 and younger ski free policy.

“The (ski) village cultivates a pretense-free scene harkening back to an earlier era of Colorado skiing,” according to the article, which appeared in Saturday’s “Off Duty Travel” section.
