The Veterans Outreach Center has moved into a new building at 432 N. Broadway.

Darla Sanders, Disabled American Veterans senior vice commander and the director of project outreach, said the organization had outgrown its old location years ago.

Sanders was complimentary of the community for helping the nonprofit raise funds to move into the new facility, nearly three times the size of the old location.

“The community has always supported us, and we have been very fortunate that when we have fundraisers or drives the community is always wonderful with supporting us,” Sanders said.

The organization moved on Jan. 2 and was operational by the third.

“We have 2,500 veterans in Montezuma County, and we serve about 200 a month,” Sanders said.

“You may have to around some boxes, but we were taking care of our veterans.”

The organization will share the new space with the Southwest Center for Independence, an organization they have worked with, but will now be able to work in the same building.

Sanders hopes to reach more veterans with a larger facility and more services available.

The nonprofit offers a variety of services to veterans including speech therapy, post-traumatic stress disorder counseling and acupuncture. It also has a commons area with a free snack bar for veterans to socialize.

“Sometimes only another veteran can really understand another vet in need,” Sanders said.
