Vehicle crashes down embankment at Slick Rock

Passerby spots victim, truck in Dolores Canyon

A pickup truck drove off Colorado Highway 141 at Slick Rock Thursday afternoon and crashed down a steep embankment, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

One person required a rope rescue and was airlifted by Careflight about 3:40 p.m., reports the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office. The extent of the injuries was not available.

The driver, a 26-year-old male, was issued a citation, said Trooper Gary Cutler. The specific citation was not available.

A passerby called 911 after spotting an individual waving his arms from the top of the pickup truck down the embankment. The vehicle landed near the Dolores River.

The road was closed temporarily during the rescue and while a tow truck pulled the vehicle from the canyon.

A dog in the truck survived was taken to a veterinarian to be checked out, Cutler said.

Dolores County Sheriff’s deputies, Colorado State Patrol, Egnar Fire Department and San Miguel Sheriff deputies responded to the incident.
