Ute Mountain Ute Tribe will hold election Oct. 14

Election includes contests for tribal chairman and three council seats; candidate packets due Aug. 15

The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe will have an election Oct. 14 in Towaoc for tribal chairman and three Tribal Council seats, including the White Mesa seat.

The Election Committee has packets for tribal members who want to run for the seats. Tribal council packets are $200, and the chairman packet is $300.

The due date to turn in packets to the Election Department is Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m., according to the Election Committee.

A list of candidates will be announced and posted after the deadline and background checks.

Terms are up for Chairman Manuel Heart, Vice Chairman Archie House Jr., Councilman Darwin Whiteman Jr. and Malcolm Lehi, representing White Mesa.

Approximately 640 tribal members are registered to vote, according to Ute Mountain Ute election officials.

During Ute Mountain Ute elections, the vote count is done in public at the Towaoc Community Center, and is overseen by the election board, election judges and security.
