Samulski seeking District 3 county commissioner seat

The race for Montezuma County Commissioner District 3 could get competitive.

Rebecca Samulski of Mancos plans to petition onto the November ballot as an unaffiliated candidate.

If her petition is approved, she would face Joel Stevenson, who won the Republican primary Tuesday. No Democrats are seeking the seat.

Unaffiliated candidates have until July 9 to turn in the required amount of signatures to the Montezuma County Clerk’s Office to make the general ballot.

The number of signatures required is 2% of ballots cast in the 2016 general election for District 3 commissioner, which is 157 signatures.

The signatures must be from registered voters in the county, and the petition needs to be verified by Montezuma County Clerk and Recorder Kim Percell.

Samulski said she plans to present her views, ideas and background after making the ballot.

“I want to give voters a choice in the fall,” she said.

Samulski said she will attend local farmers markets to talk to voters and collect signatures Wednesday in Dolores, Thursday in Mancos and Saturday in Cortez at the corner of Main and Elm Streets.
