Two suspects remain at large after fleeing from police in car, on foot

Man and woman suspected of driving stolen car

Two suspects who led law enforcement on a high-speed chase in a stolen car and eventually a foot pursuit in the Bayfield area remained at large Tuesday, law enforcement officials say.

La Plata County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to make contact with the vehicle at 6:05 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of Camino del Rio in Durango, said sheriff’s spokesman Chris Burke. The vehicle, which had been traveling southbound, sped off and led police on a high-speed chase east on U.S. Highway 160.

Bayfield Marshal’s Office, the Southern Ute Police Department and Colorado State Patrol all assisted in the chase, which was terminated by police in the 1000 block of County Road 525 for safety reasons, Burke said.

The suspects, a man and a woman, ditched the Pontiac they’d been driving somewhere in the bushes along the side of County Road 525 and fled on foot, Burke said.

Police enlisted the help of a canine search unit, but the suspects had a head start, Burke said. Officers searched “well into the dark,” Burke said, but did not find the suspects.

The sheriff’s office, which is investigating the incident, did not release identifying information about the suspects Tuesday morning.

“We don’t know if they were armed or not, but the public is safe,” Burke said.
