A box truck drove off the road and tipped onto its side Monday on U.S. Highway 160, causing delays for morning commuters east of Durango.

The driver was heading eastbound about 6:20 a.m. when he “dropped a couple tires off the road” and rolled the vehicle near mile marker 92, just east of Elmore’s Corner, said Capt. John Trentini, with the Colorado State Patrol.

Three tow trucks were needed to right the vehicle and remove it from the ditch, he said.

“They finally got it rolled over and tried to get it pulled out,” he said.

The driver, who was uninjured, was cited with careless driving and not wearing a seat belt, Trentini said.

The highway was never formally closed, but eastbound and westbound lanes had to alternate moving past the crash scene.
