In late August and early September, many of us sigh and regret that summer has gone so quickly, but some look forward to pro football, college ball, the Broncos, Notre Dame.
Here in Mancos, we can tell it’s gone by the fact that the kids are on the run again – high school and middle school cross-country teams run up the road, and an hour later come panting back. Third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade Girls on the Run do the same, with principal Cathy Epps running with them. Cathy brought the Girls on the Run – a national program – to Mancos a few years ago, and she and Adyan Farrar have worked with the girls ever since.
Don’t despair, summer will come again. In the meantime, there are many exciting events coming up.
The Mancos Valley Chorus will have its first meeting and practice on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Mancos Methodist Church on Grand Avenue. Interested newcomers are invited to attend for a tryout. The free performances will take place in December.
The La Plata Fairgrounds Craft Fair runs Dec. 2-4, and reservations for a space must be in before Oct. 15. A 10x10 space is $150, and one half that size goes for $125. Please call Margie Myers, 970-240-2117, for reservations and more information.
The new Mancos Days committee will meet on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 5-7 p.m. Anyone who is interested may come to the Mancos Community Center. We are looking for exciting, interested hard workers, new and old ideas, and anyone willing to help . Come on guys, let’s have a big turnout!
The Larry Baugh and Patty Russell ranch got a big surprise on Feb. 23 when one of their Black Angus cows gave birth to a white calf named Shotki. For the Angus breeding industry, a white calf that could produce white offspring would be a big deal.
Alas, the latest news is disappointing.
According to news from Patty Russell, “The white body color with colored points appeared to linked to the tyrosinase gene on cattle chromosome 29. ... Similar patterns exist in the mouse, Himalayan rabbit and the Siamese cat and also are caused by mutations at tyrosinase.”
