The Telluride Ski Resort has announced an April 7 closing date, and Purgatory and Hesperus plan an extended season.

“Despite an outstanding snow year, there is not sufficient skier volume to generate enough revenues to offset operating expenses in an extended season scenario,” Matt Windt, Telluride vice president of sales and marketing, said in a press release.

Purgatory is extending its daily operating schedule through April 7 and will be open Saturdays and Sundays thereafter. Purgatory has a 100-inch base, and a closing date has not yet been announced.

Hesperus has also extended its season and will continue operations into this week, opening March 29 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and March 30-31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hesperus’ closing date is planned for March 31. Hesperus has a 36-inch base.

“Last year, we all did the best with what we had,” said James Coleman, of Mountain Capital Partners, which operates Purgatory and Hesperus. “But this winter? It’s like everyday is a celebration. Guests are loving it. Employees are taking more laps. The stoke is so high across the board, and we’re eager to keep that going well into spring.”

While Purgatory and Hesperus do not release skier visit data, Coleman said that both ski areas are enjoying double-digit growth over last year.
