A bomb threat near Santa Fe Preparatory School on Thursday morning prompted an evacuation of students and a shelter-in-place order at nearby St. John’s College, according to police.
At 10:40 a.m., the Santa Fe Police Department received a report of a possible bomb threat in the 1000 block of Camino de Cruz Blanca, said Deputy Police Chief Ben Valdez.
The threat near Santa Fe Prep led school officials to order a shelter-in-place.
“Contact was made with leadership at Santa Fe Prep to inform them of an incident near their campus,” Valdez said in an email to Tri-City Record.
The campus community of St. John’s College was alerted by officials at 11 a.m. through email to immediately shelter in place.
“Please remain on campus and limit movement around campus to the extent possible,” the email read.
Santa Fe Prep students were evacuated and released to their parents after the shelter-in-place order was lifted, according to Valdez.
Santa Fe police worked alongside New Mexico State Police to manage traffic and secure the scene. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit assisted in the investigation.
A second bomb threat was also reported on Armenta Street. Staff assisted with traffic and security operations there as well.
“Out of an abundance of caution, considering yesterday’s senseless killing of political activist Charlie Kirk, City Hall was placed on a lockdown,” Valdez said. “The lockdown at City Hall was lifted at 1:47 p.m.”
As of 2 p.m., the threats on Camino de Cruz Blanca and Armenta Street were cleared.
“We take all threats seriously,” Valdez said. “They have no place in our community and individuals that make threats will be held accountable.”
