Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will offer an inaugural doctoral fellowship in Southwestern history, broadly defined, beginning in August 2014. The fellowship is a collaborative effort between the Center and the graduate program in the history department at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Doctoral candidates from the graduate program in Boulder are eligible for the full academic year fellowship to be performed in residence at the Center in Durango.

The fellow in Southwestern history will provide research support at the Center while also teaching in the FLC department of history. While pursuing his or her own dissertation research and writing, the fellow will contribute to the public programs of the Center by giving two presentations during the academic year on both personal research and support given to Center collections projects and patrons. As Center director Dr. Jay Harrison noted, the fellow “joins a professional staff engaged in outreach and facilitates the growth of the Center’s research agenda with the presence of early-career scholars working in our collections.” Dr. Paul Sutter, director of graduate studies in history in Boulder, stated that his program is “thrilled to partner with the Center of Southwest Studies and Fort Lewis College on this innovative annual fellowship. It will give one of our Ph.D. students valuable teaching experience in a liberal arts setting while also granting them access to the world-class Southwestern holdings at the Center.”

Longtime supporters of the Center, Richard and Mary Lyn Ballantine, provided an initial gift to establish the fellowship for the 2014-2015 academic year.
