Southwest Memorial Hospital received 5-star ratings in nurse communication and cleanliness from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.
The hospital was included in Becker’s list of top hospitals for nurse communication, based a survey from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems. Conducted between October 2023 and September 2024, the survey evaluates patient experiences across 10 measures. Southwest Memorial stood out in how nurses explain procedures, listen to patients and provide care.
Statewide, Colorado had nine hospitals with 5-star cleanliness and seven with 5-star nurse communication. Southwest Memorial and Animas Surgical Hospital in Durango are on both lists, which is relatively rare.
“This recognition is a testament to the dedication and compassion of our nursing staff,” Lisa Gates, chief nursing officer at Southwest Health System, said in a news release. “Our nurses consistently go above and beyond to ensure patients feel heard, respected and cared for. We are proud to see their efforts acknowledged at the national level.”
CMS released the data Aug. 6.
“Southwest Memorial Hospital’s inclusion in the 5-star list places it among an elite group of hospitals nationwide and reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to excellence in patient-centered care,” SHS said in a news release. It added that internal reports and patient feedback support the hospital’s recognition.
Southwest Memorial also earned a 5-star CMS rating for cleanliness and was named one of the 386 cleanest hospitals by Becker’s. Based on the same survey period, the rating reflects the hospital’s commitment to maintaining a safe, sanitary environment.
“We are honored to be recognized among the cleanest hospitals in the nation,” said hospital CEO Joe Theine. “This 5-star rating is a testament to the dedication of our environmental services team and the entire staff who prioritize patient safety and comfort every day.”
