Cortez, Mancos and Towaoc all have moderate air quality index levels

As of late Friday morning the air quality levels around Montezuma County have reached moderate levels, according to the U.S. Air Quality Index, with smoke plumes detected overhead.

AQI readings ranging from the 50s to the 70s have been measured for Cortez and Mancos and Towaoc as of this early afternoon, according to air quality sensor readings.

Moderate levels range from an AQI reading between 50-100.

No sensors are available in Dolores, however.

Groups of people sensitive to air quality are advised to limit their outdoor activities or to go indoors if symptoms of smoke sensitivity arise.

Groups who may be at risk include people with asthma or COPD, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control says.

Symptoms for those with such sensitivities may include trouble breathing, headaches or chest pain.

The U.S. Air Quality Index shows smoke plumes detected around the region, while wind directions are largely west, according to Windfinder.

Nearby fires north of Cortez and include the Sowbelly fire along the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area and the South Rim fire in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
