Small fire allowed to burn

A small fire at the head of Narraguinnepp Canyon in Dolores County will be allowed to burn for the time being.

Lightning triggered the fire Sunday, and it has grown to 3/4 of an acre on San Juan National Forest land.

District Ranger Derek Padilla reported it is a low-intensity fire that has not reached the canopy.

“We look for opportunities to allow for natural burning in the forest, and this is one of them,” he said. “It is a creeper fire, but if it gets into the canopy, we will have a different response.”

Recent rains have eased the fire danger, and roads near the low-burning fire limit the chance it will grow much or get out of control, he said.

A fire crew is on site monitoring the burn.

The fire is located roughly south of Brumley Reservoir and north of Cabin Reservoir.
