On Friday, Slavens True Value Hardware store in Cortez celebrated 70 years by hosting a barbecue, catered by End of Trail Catering.

Hundreds of people attended to celebrate the trusted store and enjoy a free meal. Comments on Facebook cheer on the family-owned business.

“How inspiring to see a business grow and thrive so long in our community,” Brenda Hindmarsh commented on The Journal’s post. Many others wished the store a happy anniversary.

Vendors set up tables and tents set up around the back parking lot, displaying and selling items and giving out catalogs and pamphlets. Vendors included Makita, Milwaukee, Boise Cascade and Cameron Ashley Building Projects.

KISS Country radio station set up a tent and provided music for the event, adding an element of fun to the momentous occasion.

Folks young and old enjoyed the warm weather while chatting with friends and family members. Event organizers held a raffle at the event, giving out prizes to those who entered their names.

Veterans and first responders were thanked for their service and given free items, such as an American flag or a knife.

In honor of this milestone, Slavens is holding sales all weekend. Signs at the front of the store show 20% off furniture and barbecue grills and supplies. Similar sales span all departments.

According to a plaque on the front of the store, Basil and Estie Slavens bought the hardware and lumber operation from the Jett family in 1953, and the Slavens family has owned it ever since.

“We look forward to being your favorite hardware store for 70 more years,” Karla Robson stated ahead of the celebration.
