Update: One person jailed, others are suspected in Cortez shooting

One suspect has been apprehended in the case; official statement to come Monday

One suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting Friday night near Empire Street in Cortez, but the suspect has not been named.

Cortez Police Department’s Tyson Cox said one of the suspects was in jail, but said “there were multiple suspects.”

An official statement from Chief Vernon Knuckles is expected Monday.

The Cortez Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at 4:19 p.m. Friday in the area of West Empire and North Market Streets in Cortez.

One person was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital for treatment, then transferred out of the area for a “higher level of care,” according to a news release from Vicki Shaffer, public information coordinator of Montezuma County. No other injuries were reported.

Suspects have been identified, but no arrests have been made, according to the news release.

The Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the search, Shaffer said in an email about 7:40 p.m. Friday.

The public was not believed to be in danger, but residents were asked to avoid the area.

Residents also were asked to not call dispatch for information.

Updates will be provided as they become available.
