An 8-mile run/walk to raise awareness for the aftermath of the Gold King Mine Spill will be held Saturday, Sept. 3 in Shiprock.
The Gold King Mine Spill Resilience Run/Walk II begins after a Navajo blessing at 6:30 a.m. at mile marker 31 on U.S. Highway 64, just west of Tsédaak’áán (Hogback) and will conclude at the Shiprock Nizhoni Park.
The event is free. The run/walk will conclude at Nizhoni Park with a Navajo blessing of the San Juan River and featured environmental speakers and researchers discussing what steps are being taken to address the ongoing devastation experienced by the impacted farmers, families, and communities.
New Mexico Highlands University’s Facundo Valdez School of Social Work and its Indigenous Knowledge Center along with Dine College, Ft. Lewis College; University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University; New Mexico State University; and other organizations have collaborated with Chili Yazzie, Shiprock Chapter president to highlight the environmental devastation affecting the local communities.
