Saturday, April 20

An apparently stoned driver, perhaps celebrating National Pot Day held every 4/20, spaced turning his headlights on after dark and was arrested for DUI drugs. The man, who admitted he "had smoked two hits" after work moments earlier, was also charged with possession of marijuana under 21 and possession of drug paraphernalia under 21. His weed was confiscated by the Sheriff's Office and weighed in at 13 grams.

Sunday, April 21

A pair of drunk motorcyclists, one of them packing a pistol, ran into trouble on Highway 491 at mile marker 41 after one of them crashed off the road and the other was arrested for DUI. The crash victim was taken to the hospital. The other apparently drunk man was asked if he had anything harmful in his pockets, replied he did not, and was handcuffed by Sgt. Harper and transported to jail. Following a search of his motorcycle by Deputy Minor, a loaded .380 caliber magazine was found but no firearm. Upon learning of the magazine, Sgt. Harper informed the suspect to exit the vehicle and discovered the man had a .380 caliber, semi-auto pistol hidden in his jacket with six unspent hydra-shock bullets. The weapon was seized because it was concealed and the man did not have a concealed-weapons permit.

Wednesday, April 24

A woman driving without a valid license, who had consumed a liquid lunch was pulled over around noon for speeding on Road 27. She promptly failed the roadside sobriety tests, and admitted to consuming the requisite "couple of beers." A breath test registered .176, more than three times the legal limit. She was arrested for DUI and jailed. Her lunch buddy was also intoxicated, and he was given a courtesy ride home.

Friday, April 26

A man wanted by police for four separate warrants was picked up by deputies while he tried to take care of business at the pretrial office at the MCSO office. Dismayed by his capture, the man was led off to jail, complaining that "he can never get a *%&^$@ break in this county!"

Wednesday, April 17

A man known by Montrose Police for shoplifting targeted the Cortez Wal-Mart, brazenly loading a cart with speakers and blenders worth $500 and strolling out. Alarms were triggered, but the thief got away. Police are investigating video surveillance, and the case in ongoing.

Friday. April 19

A woman at Wal-Mart who drove off, leaving her wallet on the spare tire, returned in the vain hope that she would find it in the parking lot. Video surveillance showed a man picking it up and pilfering the cash. He then placed it on some shopping carts, and it was returned to the owner. Eyes in the sky continued to track the thief as he went into Wal-Mart and did some shopping. Because he signed for a cashier's check, police were able to track him down and he was arrested at his apartment for theft.

Sunday, April 21

Police received a report of stolen tools on Chestnut Street. A man received a text from a friend that at 3 a.m. he saw a guy walking north on Chestnut St. with bolt cutters he recognized as ones his friend had recently purchased. The victim discovered other missing tools that he had stored in his vehicle because tools had gone missing from his shed.

Sunday, April 21

Police responded to Denny's at 5:30 a.m. for a disturbance. A soused couple were winding down the evening in a back booth when the male began to pass out. When awakened by staff and told to leave, he became belligerent, began cursing, then left and continued his obnoxious tirade in the parking lot. He finally shut up when he and his girlfriend were arrested for disturbing the peace, handcuffed and hauled to jail.
