Searchers look for missing hiker near Telluride

Tim Cannon thought to be in Iron Mountain area

On Monday, the San Miguel Sheriff’s Office launched a search and rescue mission for a missing Telluride man thought to be in the Iron Mountain area.

More than 80 rescue personnel and volunteers have been searching for Tim Cannon, 55, an experienced hiker who was expected home Sunday.

A National Guard helicopter and Colorado Highlands helicopter have been dropping off search and rescue members above timberline and conducting further aerial searches, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Iron Mountain is in the Sneffels Wilderness area northwest of Telluride.

On Tuesday night, the Sheriff’s Office announced on its Facebook page that the search would continue on Wednesday morning and might a trained dog team if it could be secured.

“If you want to help search, you must be an experienced hiker, be prepared to be in the field in difficult terrain for 12 hours and be self-sufficient, with food, water, headlamp and gear for inclement weather,” the Facebook post said. It encouraged searchers to meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the command center on Last Dollar Road, 2 miles west of the Deep Creek trailhead.

The Sheriff’s Office asked people who might have seen Cannon since Sunday to call the San Miguel County dispatch at 970-728-1911.
