Sheriff’s Office says child was taken to a hospital

A juvenile who went missing earlier Thursday in the San Juan Mountains was found and taken to a hospital, according to the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office.

“This search came to a positive conclusion due to everyone’s help and assistance,” read a Facebook post made by the Sheriff’s Office just after 5 p.m.

In the post, Montezuma County Search and Rescue and emergency medical helicopter company Classic Air were thanked.

The initial post notifying the public of the missing child was made about 3 p.m.

At that time, law enforcement said that they did not need additional searchers and would request more volunteer help if the need arose.

The Sheriff’s Office also urged people not to go searching on their own, as this may create an additional risk by causing more people to go missing.

“Please do not take it upon yourself to go into the search area and act on your own accord,” the post read. “All available resources are currently being used to locate the missing person. We do not want to have to divert any of those resources to locate or rescue any other persons.”

At least two other Facebook posts identified by The Journal said that the child had gone missing during a hike Wednesday evening near the San Juan Bible Camp, about 6 miles north of Mancos, but the reports could not be confirmed.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
