School boards overreach their authority

The reason we have school boards in Colorado is primarily because if taxpayer funds are used to support a public entity, taxpayers must be appropriately represented in administration of those funds.

I agree with this precept, but I don’t agree with how we’ve allowed school boards to overreach their authority. School boards should only be allowed to make decisions concerning funding. They should not have any say in instruction, staffing, safety or several other considerations.

In Colorado, instructional standards and learning objectives are established by the state, not school boards. We have allowed politics to “wick” into areas of expertise in which they have no place. Just because someone went to school, doesn’t make them a professional educator.
